TUESDAY HOMILY OF 9TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “GIVE BACK TO CAESAR… AND TO GOD…”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

2 Peter 3:11-15,17-18; Psalm 89(90):2-4, 10, 14, 16; Mark 12:13-17

Sections of Jewish leadership that were hitherto sworn enemies unite against a perceived common enemy, Jesus, and test Him in order to entrap Him. Many are deceived into thinking that one could serve both God and mammon as interpretation of Jesus’ mention of Caesar and God. Realistically speaking, Caesar or any other human cannot lay claim to anything. All belongs to God, including Caesar and all that he possesses. So we cannot be people of faith in church and on Sundays, and then immerse ourselves in ungodly ways of the world during the week; receiving Eucharist on Sunday, and consulting the “dibia” or “Babalawo” on Wednesday.

We belong to God; Caesar has no absolute claim on us. Yet, out of fear and insecurity, we sell out and give to Caesar what is actually due to God. Whose insignia is on you, if I may ask? Whose mark do you bear? The Lamb’s or the beast’s? We and all that we have and are belong to God. We must never subordinate what is God’s to any human force. Since Christian commitment is total and should be undiluted, Peter reminds us that we must live our lives with heaven in view, and as people who wait and long of the coming of the Lord. Holy, saintly, spotless and unblemished life: that is his recommendation to us, so that when the Lord comes, He would admit us into His eternal reign in the New Heavens and the New Earth. We must resist all anti-God forces and live righteously.

Lord Jesus, lead me on the path of eternal life. Amen.
