HOMILY THEME: HEALING SOUL AND BODY
BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa
Amos 7:10-17, Ps. 19:8-11, Matthew 9:1-8
A wise saying goes, “A healthy body and a peaceful soul are the greatest treasures.” Jesus exemplifies holistic healing, addressing the spirit, mind, and body. When a paralytic was brought to Him, Jesus first said, “Take heart, my son, your sins are forgiven” (Matthew 9:2). This suggests that the man’s physical ailment might have been linked to his sins, although not all suffering is due to sin, as shown by the stories of Job and Jesus (John 9:1-3).

Physical and spiritual health are intertwined; physical diseases can affect the spirit, and spiritual ailments can harm the body. Holistic healing involves addressing all aspects, including spiritual healing through the sacrament of reconciliation (confession). Two common mistakes are relying solely on physicians and neglecting God, or praying without seeking medical help; and focusing on bodily healing while neglecting the soul. King Asa’s condition worsened because he sought only physicians and not the Lord (2 Chronicles 16:12).
In healing the paralytic, Jesus prioritizes spiritual healing. How dedicated are we to seeking comprehensive healing for our spirit, mind, and body?
