THURSDAY HOMILY OF 12TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: THE HEAVENLY SURPRISE

BY: Fr. Karabari Paul

2 Kings 24:8-17; Psalm 78(79):1-5, 8-9; Matt 7:21-29

‘Not everyone who says to me: Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my father in heaven’ (Mtt.7:22).

The Christian journey without heaven will be absolutely disastrous. Heaven is the reward for our Christian struggles. Without it, the faith we profess would be useless. But it is shocking that not all those who call the name of Jesus will inherit the kingdom of God; not all those who prophesy, not all those who work miracles.

This is a ‘big’ surprise because Jesus had declared: ‘Signs like these will accompany those who believe; in my Name they will cast out demons and speak new languages…They will lay hands on the sick and they will be healed (Mark 16:17-18).

The Gospel of today is the concluding part of the sermon of the Mount. In it Jesus addresses the gap between knowing and doing. There are two parts: hearing the words and putting them into practice. Knowing what to do is necessary, but the blessing is in putting it into action.

We can be gifted spiritually, and know all the theologies but we need to practise loving a difficult person, forgiving those who hurt us, give some of our money away, encourage others, bless our enemies, apologise when needed. If we fail to do these, our religious life will be merely theatrical production. St James wrote: ‘Be doers of the word, and not merely hearers’ (James 1:22). Heaven is for those who do the will of God and not those who merely practice religion. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. May God have mercy on us, heal our world, bless and protect us all through Christ Our Lord Amen. Please, stay safe. Good morning
