SATURDAY HOMILY OF 8TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: DIVINE AUTHORITY

BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa

Mark 11:27-33

A long time ago, there was a prophecy about a great and final prophet who would come and speak with divine authority (Deuteronomy 18:18). This prophecy is fulfilled in the coming of Jesus. Jesus fulfilled this prophecy when he said, “I have not spoken on my own authority. My Father commanded me what I should say” (John 8:28).

The life story of Jesus shows he was a teacher with a difference. He spoke in such a way that educated people were not disappointed with his lack of depth, and the uneducated were not isolated by any bombastic, flowery words, and abstract ideas. Rather, his listeners were astonished by his sagacity (wisdom), because he spoke with a charismatic authority that held his listeners spellbound (Mark 2:22).

Jesus is the model teacher as he speaks to his followers saying, “Learn from me” (Matthew 11:29). Jesus was different from the other teachers because he was real and he lived what he preached. He talked the talk and walked the walk. How do we exercise the authority and power we receive from God?
