HOMILY OF THURSDAY 12TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

Nigerian slang distinguishes two kinds of people: *kpako* (hardwood) and *ajebo* (ajebutter). The kpako person is one who grew up under tough conditions, went through the school of hard knocks, and endured hardships and the storms of life. The ajebo is someone who was pampered, spoiled, fragile, and unable to go through tough conditions of life. Jesus compares kpako Christians to a strong building that remains steadfast in the face of all kinds of turbulence, storms, and floods. In contrast, He describes ajebo Christians as a building with a poor foundation that crumbles, tumbles, and collapses even with a little impact and pressure from the forces of nature.

Jesus says, “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock, and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall because it had been founded on a rock” (Matthew 7:24-25). A person deeply rooted in Jesus is one whose life is nourished by the Word of God, who acts on the Word, and who can withstand the many trials and storms of life. How committed are we to building our lives on the solid foundation of listening to and living by the Word?
