HOMILY OF SATURDAY 9TH WEEK OF THE ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B (IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY)

HOMILY THEME: A PURE HEART

BY: Fr. Karabari Paul

‘’ …and his mother kept all these things in her hear” (Luke 2:41-52).

If yesterday we celebrated God’s heart for us, today we celebrate a human heart that reflects love for God; a heart that is pure. The Bible says that people with such heart shall see God (Mtt 5:8). The heart of Mary shows her interior life of obedience, humility, and love yet subjected to sorrows.

The honour given to the Immaculate Heart of Mary is connected to the worship of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The worship given to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is that which is given to the ‘Divine Heart’ that is exceedingly occupied with love for humanity but in turn recieved ingratitude from same humanity. Whereas the Heart of Mary is venerated because of her love for God and her Son Jesus.

God examines our heart attitude, whatever we do for Him must be done willingly. God delights in those who give to Him purely, obediently, willingly, sacrificially, joyfully and lovingly. And Mary gave all (Luke 2:19). It is possible to be obedient in behaviour and never with the heart. It is just a matter of putting on a show. But God loves the obedience that comes from the heart; and that Mary had shown.

Sometimes, God doesn’t want us to have a reasoning heart but a heart that ponders. Don’t try to figure out everything, but believe it is well. We can tell when we have moved from pondering to reasoning by the confusion and crises we experience. Mary pondered the word of God in her heart. Let us make effort to nurture a heart that reflects God’s love and desires like that of Mary. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. May God have mercy on us, heal our country Nigeria, bless and protect us all through Christ Our Lord Amen.
