HOMILY OF SATURDAY 9TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B (THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY)

HOMILY THEME: MARY’S HEART BEATS FOR GOD

BY: Fr. Anthony O. Ezeaputa

Isaiah 61:9-11; Psalm (1 Sam 2:1, 4-8); Luke 2:41–51

When we speak of Mary’s heart, we’re referring to her inner life, the center, and the very core of who she is. Mary’s heart is immaculate because her intentions, personality, and character are totally pure. Her entire inner life is solely dedicated to God. Mary isn’t of two minds. She doesn’t go back and forth between knowing what is right and doing the wrong thing. She is faithful only to God.

Jesus Himself teaches: “The things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile. For from the heart come evil thoughts: murder, adultery, unchastity, theft, false witness, blasphemy” (Matthew 15:18–19). In other words, they all begin with the heart. As a result, the human heart encapsulates the larger picture of our world in miniature. And as the heart goes, so goes the entire world.

Pope John Paul II linked today’s spiritual and physical battles to what he called the “culture of death.” It is the outright murder of the human soul, as well as the disfigurement of the human heart. Because we have not protected our hearts from the enemy’s assaults—things like cold indifference, a profound lack of belief in God, and a profound hatred for those who are different than us—the world is falling into greater sin and wickedness.

To counteract this in our day and age, God has also made His beloved Son’s mother our mother. In this way, Mary exemplifies what it means to give our hearts entirely to God and to Him alone.

According to Pope Benedict XVI, when Mary said definitively “yes” to God’s will, this “word of her heart” changed history by bringing the Savior into the world. Similarly, how might the world change if each of us took this call to live for God alone seriously and intentionally? At the end, may the immaculate heart of Mary triumph. Amen.
