HOMILY OF SATURDAY 11TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: THE NATURE OF FAITHFULNESS

BY: Fr Joseph Nyarko

2 Chronicles 24:17-25/Psalm 89:4-5,29-34/Matthew 6:24-34

Remaining light in the midst of darkness offer your enemies and opportunity to see clearly, pick up weapons and destroy you to their own disadvantage. A faithful servant may not receive the applause of his generation but remains an unquenchable example for eternity. In most cases, leaving differently forces the rest to, physically, eliminate you from their midst. Faithfulness to God is an indirect invitation to persecution and martyrdom.

Things were falling apart in Israel. Joash has been preserved from death and prepared for the throne. The architect for his protection and enthronement was Jehoiada, the priest of God, who had a son called Zachariah. Joash remained faithful to God in the time of Jehoiada but turned away to evil after the death of the priest. When God’s Spirit filled Zachariah and he proclaimed the Word of God, he was rewarded with evil. King Joash commanded and the son of Jehoiada was stoned in the court of the Temple.
Thus, God was rejected, his prophet was stoned to death, and the Temple was desecrated. As expected, the wicked faced the consequences of their wickedness. Obedience is an act of following God, the lover of mankind. Such following implies bearing pains for the love of God and remaining faithful to death. The world will not appreciate us but we must keep in mind that God is the rewarder of our deeds.
