Sarki Gambo, known as Baban hakuri (father of patience), was a wise and just king, deeply loved for his fairness. One day, a young man named Sauna was brought before him, accused of stealing food. The kingdom’s laws were strict, and many demanded severe punishment for Sauna. However, upon hearing that Sauna had stolen out of desperation to feed his siblings after losing his job, King Gambo saw the remorse in Sauna’s eyes. Instead of harsh punishment, the king decided to help Sauna. He ordered that Sauna be given a job in the palace to earn a fair wage and provide for his family. Additionally, he ensured that Sauna’s family received enough food until Sauna could support them independently. The king’s mercy amazed the people, as he allowed Sauna to change.

This story parallels how Jesus treated Matthew, the tax collector. Despite societal expectations for Jesus to shun Matthew, Jesus showed him kindness and acceptance, which shocked many, especially the Pharisees. Jesus explained, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick” (Matthew 9:12), challenging our judgmental attitudes toward sinners. St. Augustine echoes this by urging us to “hate the sin and love the sinner,” reminding us to be compassionate and non-judgmental. Do we embody this compassionate attitude towards sinners and outcasts in our lives?
