HOMILY OF FRIDAY 12TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: FRIENDS OF OUTCASTS
BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa
2 Kings 25:1-12/Psalm 137:1-6/Matthew 8:1-4
A social outcast is someone rejected, excluded, and ostracized by society. Jesus, known as a friend to outcasts, demonstrated this compassionately when a leper approached Him, humbly requesting, “If you want to, you can make me clean.” Jesus responded with deep compassion, saying, “I want to; be clean” (Mark 1:41). Instantly, the leper was healed, restoring not only his physical health but also his dignity, faith, and social acceptance.

Jesus’ mission emphasizes restoration and redemption, fulfilling the prophecy of Joel: “I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten” (Joel 2:25). Like the leper, we too suffer from moral and spiritual “leprosy,” needing divine intervention for healing and restoration in our lives. We echo the Psalmist’s prayer, “Restore us, O Lord God of hosts! Let your face shine that we may be saved!” (Psalm 80:19).
How do we participate in Jesus’ mission of restoration today? What is our approach to those marginalized and ostracized in our modern society?
