CATHOLIC HOMILY FOR 12TH THURSDAY OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: HEAVEN ISN’T A CINEMA!

BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor

2 Kings 24:8-17; Psalm 78(79):1-5, 8-9; Matt 7:21-29

When I was little, my parents taught me a couple of things: ‘don’t eat anywhere outside the home, don’t eat suya, don’t stay out late, make sure you tell someone where you’re going before leaving the house, be respectful and kind’, etc. As I grew older, I broke some of these rules of course, but these foundational principles shaped me. Today, Jesus says heaven is not about lip service; it’s about being sensible, and having a rock solid foundation by acting on the word of God.

These days we see how many mega churches have become cinema houses. Deliverance and so called miracles are televised for the world to see, while the man/woman of God is portrayed as a theatrical magician on stage. Hmm. We must be careful. Heaven is not about miracles, prophesying and casting out demons. Your preacher may be able to heal the sick and raise the dead, he may be able to tell you your account balance from the pulpit, or know the name of your grandmother… But what’s all that if he fails to lead you to heaven, or make heaven himself? Friends, let’s get serious. Heaven isn’t a cinema!

Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead.
