12TH SUNDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: DO YOU NOT CARE?

BY: Fr Anthony Chukwuebuka Ohaekwusi

Mark 4: 35–41

When we call someone a master, say in drawing, economics or football, we acknowledge that such a person has great control in the art or practice of that particular activity, either through talent, study or training. One’s mastery in anything shows his ability to do it with ease and efficiency.

I watched three kids on the street showing off their skills on their bikes. One was struggling and learning, another was good, but the third was truly amazing. The one who seemed to be the best among them acted like a leader. He shows his skills, and the others try to imitate him. But one thing that is spectacular about him is that he does it with such ease that he is less concerned about the risks. He smiles where others panic, thrives where others struggle, dares where others fear. He was so cool and calm in the way he handled the bicycle, like a master in control, he was so confident and less nervous. And when he finishes one skill, he shouts in amazement: “I am a master.”

The disciples of Jesus called Him Master, but they panicked at every test of His mastery. They were as frightened as a passenger being driven at top speed by a driver he doesn’t trust. Jesus rebuked them for their lack of faith, even though they knew Him and called Him Master. And when they asked: , do you not care? They expressed their frustration that Jesus knows what to do, but probably cares not to lift a finger. This frustration reveals more about Jesus’ mastery and the apostles’ ignorance. As a master, Jesus handled the situation with ease, even taking a nap to show that His presence is sufficient assurance and there is no situation greater than His unwavering love. We often find ourselves in situations where we feel that God is absent or asleep. A closer encounter with Him gives us the overwhelming conviction that the Master, who dared and conquered death so that we could live, will always care, even when we feel He is asleep. He is the Lord of our lives, who speaks from the heart of every storm and controls every situation with ease.

Remain lifted and do have a great Sunday
