10TH SUNDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “ANYONE WHO DOES THE WILL OF GOD, IS MY BROTHER AND SISTER AND MOTHER”

BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu

Genesis 3:9-15/ 2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1/ Mark 3:20-35

This is the 10th Sunday in ordinary time (Yr. B). Last Friday we celebrated the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. On Saturday we also celebrated the Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. These hearts are on fire with great love for God and humanity. Mary did the will of God when she said to the angel; “Behold I am the handmaid of the Lord! Let it be done to me according to your word” (Lk.1:38). Mary is the mother of Christ and the mother of all believers.

In the same way, the heart of the Lord Jesus is full of compassion for all humanity. He suffered the agony of the cross in order to wipe away our sins. God is not happy with those who do not do his will. He rebuked Adam and Eve for failing to do his will. “Who told you that you were naked. Have you been eating of the tree l forbade you to eat?”(Gen.3:9-15). This rebellious attitude of Adam and Eve chased them out of paradise.

Jesus loves anyone who does the will of God. For this reason, on hearing that Mary his mother was looking for him he said: “anyone who does the will of God, that person is my brother and my sister and my mother” (Mk.3:20-35). Mary’s acceptance of God’s will is for the good of all humanity. She is full of grace. For Paul says: “You see, all this is for your benefit, so that the more grace is multiplied among people, the more Thanksgiving there will be, to the glory of God”(2Cor. 4:13-5:1). Let us pray to do God’s will in our lives always. Happy Sunday.
