(Lk. 9:57-62)
Memorial of St. Francis of Assisi.

In the day’s Gospel, memorial of St. Francis of Assisi, Jesus visits His friends Martha and Mary. Martha immediately became burdened with service while Mary sat beside the Lord to listen to what He was going to say. Martha complained to Jesus but Jesus lauded Mary for choosing the better part.

The “better part” was to listen to the Lord. Mary knew that it was important, before anything, that the words of Jesus be known in order to be guided in life. It does not mean that what Martha did, i. e., to be busy and be obsessed with work, were not important. Listening helps a lot in treading the right path. Being busy may result to fatigue and misdirection. Even soldiers report first to their captain. Employees get cues from their bosses. Children need to listen to their parents. We must listen to God first.

St. Francis of Assisi, listened to God through nature. St. Francis saw God in His Creation. He felt God’s presence in them. He also knew that Creation is God’s expression of Himself. God talks through nature. Listen to the birds, the bees, and the trees! They murmur, they speak, and they express God and His beauty. Before God, we listen. His words are more important than ours. They murmur, they speak, and they show God’s beauty!

St. Francis!
