HOMILY OF 5TH FRIDAY OF EASTER YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: READY TO DIE WITNESSING?

BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor

1 Cor.15:1-8; John 14:6-14

To be an apostle is to be sent (with a message). The message is that Christ died for our sins and rose from the dead, in accordance with the scriptures. This is what spurs us on. We too have been sent with the same message. Christ died, and won victory over death by his resurrection. If Jesus could do this, what else can we ask in his name that he would not do, if truly it’s in our best interests? Hence, we must be ready to witness to Jesus Christ, even if it means dying.

Friends, the early Apostles died, actively witnessing to the gospel of Christ. Philip who was formerly a disciple of John the Baptist, became a disciple of Jesus after his master was beheaded. He too was later killed for the sake of the gospel. James, Jesus’s cousin, was the head of the Church in Jerusalem before he was killed by Herod. They died in active Christian duty. When last did we tell someone about Jesus? We must resolve to do that today by what we say and do. We must bring whatever prevents us from doing so to Jesus in prayer. In the end, it doesn’t matter if we die preaching. After all, there’s no nobler cause worth dying for.

God bless your weekend ahead. Sts Philip and James, pray for us!
