HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY AUGUST 17 2022

Today’s readings are summarized in God’s declaration: “I am going to call the shepherds to account. I am going to take my flock back from them and I shall not allow them to feed my flock… I shall rescue my sheep from their mouth… I am going to look after my flock myself and keep all of it in view” (Ezk 34: 9, 11). God cares for all His people and cannot be outdone in generosity.

In the first reading (Ezk 34: 1-11), God condemns the actions of the leaders who selfishly feed on the people entrusted to their care instead of caring, providing and protecting them. For this reason, such responsibility is to be taken away from them. In your work or vocation, do you exploit the system for your selfish gain?

Jesus, in the gospel (Matt. 20: 1-16), teaches about God’s mercy and compassion with the parable of the vineyard owner who employs labourers at different times of the day, but pays them all the same day’s wage.

Dear friends, in our relationship with God, we become emotionally hurt only when we expect God to do our will instead of being open to God’s will. God seems unfair at times. Yes! God doesn’t apply fairness but mercy. In fairness, no one is worthy of God’s favours. God, in His generosity wants what is good for us all. God cares for us as a Shepherd cares for His flock, ready to lay down His life for the flock. How willing am I to remain in God’s flock?

I pray as we journey in life today, we will always envision a bigger picture in life where God is directing our affairs. As we do our part, may we trustfully lean on the will of God, Who constantly leads us to greener pasture.. Have a trust-full day!
