HOMILY FOR SATURDAY OF THE FIFTH WEEK OF LENT

HOMILY THEME: REVELATION OF GOD’S  GLORY

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Jn. 11:1-45)
Saturday in the Fifth Week of Lent (Day 39 of Lent)

In the day’s Gospel Jesus was informed of the death of His good friend Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Marta. Jesus went to visit Lazarus. He was met by Martha who expressed her sadness to Jesus and her feelings that Lazarus would not have died had He been present.

Martha’s words had been uttered by many of us. We tend to blame the Lord’s absence or lack of care for those whom we love. In reality, even with the presence of the Lord, if it is His will, even death cannot be presented. Jesus brought Lazarus back to life to send a strong message. Lazarus eventually died. He did not live forever. Jesus made the miracle to reveal God’s glory. The Jews need to know the Lord. Jesus was God’s witness. Jesus was the Messiah.

John, the Evangelist, gave an account of only a number of miracles. He used the miracles to reveal Jesus’ divinity. In the process He revealed the Father at work. More than just putting on a show, healing a sick, bringing back to life the dead, turning water into wine, etc., the miracles were part of Jesus’ testimony to God’s power and glory.

The coming Holy Week will be different from the ministry of Jesus. Not much will be said. No more miracles will be made. Jesus will be rejected, humiliated, sentenced, tortured, and killed. Holy Week will challenge our faith. It will reveal How His Words and actions affected us. Will we still believe? Will we still identity ourselves with Him or deny Him like what Peter did? Will we be one of the Romans who saw Him as an impostor and a criminal? Or, finally, we will see the Savior in Him?

Jesus is Emmanuel. He is with us. Whatever happens, we must never forget He is with us. Even if death visits us, remember that He is the resurrection and the life.
