HOMILY FOR MONDAY AUGUST 22 2022

‘For with God nothing will be impossible.’

God’s timing is always right. He is never early or late. Everything He does happens at just the right time. God sets the schedule; sometimes we have to run to keep up, and other times we have to slow down in order to get in step with Him. Mary planned to marry Joseph, then probably have a child, but God had a different plan. The child had to be without inherited sin, so He needed a perfect Father; God. In human terms, the timing couldn’t have been worse.

So in the Gospel of today (Luke 1:26-38), the angel Gabriel was sent by God to Mary to reveal His will. Everything about this messenger and the message he bore was strange. What he told Mary would happen to her was never known even from history. That alone should cause fear and panic within Mary. But she also knew as affirmed by the angel that ‘nothing is impossible with God.’ Mary accepted and became pregnant, and Joseph wasn’t the father. Mary allowed herself to be interrupted by God. It is by aligning ourselves with God’s will that will realise our happiness.

Besides being rejected by society, the law said she could be stoned to death. Sometimes things happen in our lives which seem all wrong. They don’t go the way we planned, and they might seem to make our lives more challenging. It is in those times we need to respond like Mary did: ‘I am the Lord’s servant…May your word to me be fulfilled’ (Luke 1:38). Mary showed incredible faith by trusting God even though His plan wouldn’t have made sense to the society. God has a plan, and He is always working towards it.

The trouble is, we are only working with limited information, so we become impatient when He doesn’t answer our prayers when and how we think He should. The Bible tells us that ‘when the right time came, God sent his Son.’ Israel had been waiting for hundreds of years for the Messiah to come, but God knew the perfect time for Him to arrive. Sometimes we have to wait a long time to see how God’s been working in our lives. In the waiting and in the mystery, we need to put our trust in the One who is always on time.

God has a plan for our life that requires certain things to happen at a particular time. And since He sees the big picture and we are working with limited information, we must trust Him – even when we don’t see how it will all come together. God can take the loss of a relationship or a job and make it work for your good. The trouble is, while He is doing all this, we can feel uncomfortable and downright miserable.

Are you worried about the future? ‘Don’t be impatient for the Lord to act! Keep travelling steadily along his pathway and in due season he will honour you with every blessing’ (Psalm 37:34). Relax: the God who comforted Elizabeth whom the people called barren, who arranged for His Son to be born into the right family, at the right time, in the right place, is looking out for you today. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. May God have mercy on us, heal our world, bless and protect us all through Christ Our Lord Amen. Good morning.
