Homily for Monday March 28 2022

Nigerians often use an acronym WULLP (Wishing U Long Life and Prosperity) as a birthday wish. Irish playwright, Bernard Shaw, says, “Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I got hold of for a moment, and I want it to burn as brightly as possible before turning it over to future generations.” Despite the reality of death, we all desire to have long, beautiful, enjoyable and fruitful life. The Psalmist reminds us 70 years is our biological lifespan and 80 years for those who are strong. Hundreds of years before the coming of Jesus, the prophet Isaiah revealed God’s plan and gave assurances of blessings for each person. The prophet declares, “No more shall there be an infant… that lives but a few days, or an old man who does not fill out his days…” (Isaiah 65:20). Jesus fulfils this prophecy of Isaiah when he prolonged the biological life of many sick and dying people, such as the son of a royal official. Jesus assured the official, “Go, your son will live” (John 4:50). Jesus gives something more than mere long life, which is abundant and fruitful life (John 10:10). In addition, He gives eternal life to all who live and believe in him (John 11:25-26). How eager are we in this season of lent to live and believe in him so as to live eternally?
