HOMILY FOR FRIDAY AUGUST 12 2022

Ezek.16:1-15,60,63; Matt.19:3-12

Perhaps self worship has never been as popular as it is now in our day. Thanks to advances in medical science and social media. People spend millions of dollars altering themselves now. We want bigger and better busts, prettier curves, curvier hips, etc. Those who can’t afford plastic surgery, paint up their faces in layers and layers of make-up, trying to hide the spots, scars and acnes. For what? So that we can strike the perfect pose behind smartphones and camcorders? So that we can have millions of followers who are busy envious and jealous of our supposed fame and stardom?

Friends, in the first reading of today, God accuses Jerusalem of becoming infatuated with her own beauty. She had forgotten when she was struggling in her own blood. Why do we have so many broken marriages today? Is it not because couples sometimes bury themselves in self worship, to the detriment of their spouses? You want a perfect spouse, forgetting that you aren’t perfect yourself. This is so unfair. Finally, Jesus says that deciding to remain a Eunuch for the sake of heaven is a worthwhile decision for those who can indeed make it. Let’s abandon fornication, divorce and adultery for heaven’s sake. When we face our imperfections, grace makes us better. Forgive us Lord, for the many times we’ve been lost in self worship, Amen.

Good morning dear. God bless your weekend.
